Today,
September 30th, we celebrate International Translator’s Day. We render homage
to Saint Jerome of Estridon, the person who translated the Bible.
International
Translator’s Day was officially established by the International Federation of
Translators (FIT) in 1991 to highlight the relevance of translation and
interpretation as an art and craft. It helps people to come to understand each
other, develop empathy and come to agreements. A clear transposition of a
message from one language into another helps to bring people closer together,
to settle peace and to promote mutual understanding and development, according
to the UN Assembly held in 2017. That same day, the Assembly declared September
30th as International Translation Day.
Some of the
mottos of translators have been:
“Translation is the Foundation of Multilingualism and
Cultural Diversity”
“Translator’s Responsibility to the Profession and
Society”
“Many Languages – One Profession”.
