Azerbaijan Conference organized by IIU

I'm thankful to IIU and Prof Inga Karchilava for having invited me to speak at this international conference.
Having the opportunity to highlight the role of women in education and share perspectives with other important academicians is a luxury we cannot access too often. This time I have had this pleasure.

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST VIOLENCE AND BULLYING AT SCHOOL INCLUDING CYBERBULLYING

No place for fear: Ending school violence for better mental health and learning. Is the motto presented by UNESCO in the campaign against bullying this year.

Studies held on this issue have shown that most violence and bullying at school is perpetrated by peers, but teachers and other members of school staff are also involved in this negative behavior.

There are many significant effects of violence and bullying. Among them, we can mention low academic achievement and mental health problems, which result in detriment of life quality.

Students who suffer bullying feel like outsiders at school. They tend to leave formal education after finishing secondary school. And they undergo feelings of loneliness, and deep sadness which could even push them into the idea of suicide.

The top reason for bullying seems to be physical appearance, followed by ethnicity, nationality and the colour of one’s skin. Students seen as “different” in any way are at risk of being bullied.

This does not only happen at school. Nowadays, after the pandemic, cyberbullying has increased dramatically.

Many people perceive bullying and cyberbullying as a rite of passage towards adulthood and consider that it is not so dangerous. Moreover, they feel that there is almost nothing we can do to stop it. Instead, we should get involved in fighting this kind of violence. In so doing, we can prevent or address it successfully.

A point to bear in mind: No child is born hating others. This is a behavior children learn from their caretakers. Sometimes, even without noticing it, adults let their hidden agendas permeate the upbringing of their kids. It is a question of self-awareness and we should work at it.

We will make the world a better place to live in if we join our positive vibes.

WORKSHOP AT EMBA SAN JUSTO, SANTA FE

On June 6th I ran a workshop at EMBA (Municipal School of Fine Arts) in San Justo, Santa Fe Province.

Authorities gave me a warm welcome and Luisina Montegrosso and Mariela Avico, my former students at the Teaching Education Programme and now my colleagues, made great hosts.

The audience participated enthusiastically in the activities and we spent a good time together.

At the end of the workshop, the hosts gave me a certificate issued by the Municipal Mayor, Arq. Nicolás Cuesta, and the Education Coordinator, Mgter. Mónica Astore. In this certificate they acknowledged my contribution to education in the frame of UNESCO’s Education for Sustainability Goals since San Justo Government adheres to UNESCO’s Sustainability Development Goals included in UN 2030 Agenda.

The hosts gave me a present in the name of EMBA. It was a notebook made of recycled materials. Another sample of how they care for sustainability.

Thanks for the experience. It has been actually rewarding and enriching for me.

International Women's Day in Namaste Indian Group Magazine

I'm proud honoured to have had my article published by Namaste Indian Group. This time, the issue was devoted to honour women and I consider all women need (or better, must) have a say about the unfair situations many women undergo. If we make their problems visible, they are likely to get fixed by powerful people who care. If this is not possible, at least we will be doing our share to change the world. Let's go on doing little things in each one's context because they are the ones which bring about bigger changes.

Why should we make this explicit?

I prepared this post for ADIafrica, but I considered it worth publishing here.
Hope you enjoy reading it.

Why do we need to make this message explicit? This is a question I often ask myself.

Maybe for a long time women have been stereotyped as housewives and that deprived them of the possibility of dreaming high.

The task for Education for Sustainability Development is to help all women to have access to the same possibilities men have always had.

Rising awareness of how important it is for women to achieve self-realization is paramount. Women, as well as men, are the first educators at home. Both of them need to feel satisfied with their achievements so that they can help their children to have a view of what they can achieve as well in the future.

Remember that we learn what we live, not what we are told.
